Summer is here. As the days heat up and the weather becomes more and more beautiful, you may already be thinking about summer activities that you can do – as a caregiver – with a senior whom you assist on a regular basis. This is a great time to get outdoors and soak up some Vitamin D-loaded sunshine! Fresh, warm air and sunshine are all beneficial to our mental and physical well-being. In this brief guide, we discuss 3 summer activities that you and the senior that can be done with seniors.
-
Visit an Outdoor Park
Depending on the area where you live and work, it is quite likely that you have a park or two that you may visit. Visiting a park as a caregiver with a senior is a wonderful activity. These often include benches or picnic tables in the shade, a source of clean water, restrooms, and other amenities. While at the park, you may observe children playing, families spending time together, bird watching, looking at the plants and flowers, and even engaging in a little exercise – such as walking, leg lifts, or – if it is available – swimming!
-
Visit Community Events
Many local communities have events. Examples include sporting events, theater events, concerts, craft shows, farmer’s markets, yard sales, flea markets, and even venues where various food and merchandise vendors set up. The senior in your life may have an interest in attending one of these local events.

Outdoor Games and Recreation
Yes, it is fun to play indoor board games and possibly a game of Bridge here and there, but why not step out of the norm and play an outside game? There are many options! These include cornhole and toss game sets, giant Jenga, giant Scrabble, yard tic tac toe, giant checkers, hot potato, red light green light, and even giant jacks! Not only will this bring back memories for the seniors, but it will also bring delight to their day while they create brand-new memories with you! If you are in search of fun summer activities, this is the way to go!
Heat Sensitivity
All of the above-listed outdoor activity ideas are fun. However, it is important to remember that seniors are more sensitive to heat than other people. While outdoors, provide refreshments to keep the individual properly hydrated and as cool as possible. Be sure to ensure that their head, face, and skin are protected from the rays of the sun and any outdoor critters that you may come in contact with.
