The History

The origins of National Nurses Day can be traced back to Dorothy Sutherland. In the year of 1953, she worked at the Department of Health in the United States. It was at that time that she composed and mailed a letter to President Eisenhower with a proposal for the development of the day for nurses. Just one year later, the day was celebrated by many. It was not until the year of 1974 that an official proclamation was made regarding the development of National Nurse Week by President Nixon.

In the year of 1982, the United States Congress elected May 6th at the National Day of Recognition for nurses throughout the country. President Ronald Reagan fully supported this and officially signed off on the set proposal. In the year of 1990, the American Nurses Association made an expansion of the observance. They decided to make the celebration of the day into a week-long event that runs from the date of May 6th to May 12th each year. Each year, a new theme is chosen by that same association. The theme is the method of acknowledging the unique services offered by nurses.
