Who Is Eligible for Memory Care in the State of New Jersey?

Currently, there are nearly 6 million individuals in the United States that have been diagnosed with at least one form of dementia. In those over the age of 65, at least 1 out of every 10 have Alzheimer’s disease. By the year of 2050, the number of people with dementia is expected to skyrocket to 14 million.

In the State of New Jersey, dementia is considered to be the 4th leading cause of death among females and the 8th among males. There are several memory care facilities located throughout the State of New Jersey. In this guide, you will learn who is eligible for these services.

Memory Care Admission Guidelines for New Jersey

In New Jersey, there are two types of residential assisted living facilities:

  1. Assisted Living Residences (ALRs)
  2. Comprehensive Personal Care Homes (CPCHs)

Those that offer memory care for dementia patients are required to have guidelines in place that pertain to admissions and discharges. Additionally, the staff must go through a mandatory training program for dementia.

These facilities are inspected at least once every two years by the Division of Health Facilities Evaluation and Licensing. These inspections are unannounced. More are performed if complaints are received.

The following outlines the residents that may be admitted to a memory care unit:

All disabled individuals over the age of 18 who meet the following criteria:

  • The individual needs help in many activities of daily living, such as eating, mobility, bathing, and toileting
  • The individual has been medically diagnosed with and suffer from a form of cognitive impairment, such as Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia
  • The individual has either chronic or an unstable condition that is psychological, medical, emotional, and/or behavioral
  • The individual qualifies for hospice care

The following individuals may not be admitted to a memory care unit offered at an assisted living facility:

  • Those that require a respirator or are in need of mechanical-based ventilation
  • Are considered to be in a vegetative state
  • Those that display aggression, are considered combative, and/or those that are disruptive
  • Those who pose an immediate danger to the other residents within the memory care unit

Does Medicaid Cover Eligible Individuals for Memory Care in New Jersey?

The Medicaid Program within the State of New Jersey will cover all associated costs of the services for those who are eligible for memory care. This is made possible through the Managed Long-Term Services and Supports program.

The room and board monthly fees are the responsibility of the patient that is placed within the memory care program. In most instances, these individuals qualify for Social Security Disability and the fees may be taken from this each month.
